D'Tandoor Damansara Utama

This is quite a nice restaurant that I use to visit.

Article extracted from the blog of Simon Says

A few weeks ago I went to D'Tandoor to utilize my Groupon voucher that I bought about a month before. That day I went there is the last day the voucher is valid. The deal is RM20 for Northern Indian Banquet Dinner consists of 13 dishes for 1 person in D'Tandoor, normally it will cost RM39.90 but I only paid RM15 because I used my Groupon RM5 token for discount.

D'Tandoor is a popular restaurant serving Northern Indian cuisine. It's quite different from the local Indian food because most of our Indian food here in Malaysia is based on Southern Indian.

Even though the voucher wrote dinner but actually lunch also can redeem. Started with appetizers consists of 3 dishes. Samosa, Tandoori Chicken and Vegetable Pakora (Mildly spiced vegetable dipped in gram flour and golden fried). My favourite here is Tandoori Chicken. The meat is still very juicy and smooth unlike tandoori chicken that I ate in some mamak restaurant which grilled the chicken till too dry losing all the meat juice.

After that the mains are one. OMG, all this food can feed 3 persons. These is only part of the whole 13 dishes, there are more coming. One thing I noticed about the different local Indian food here and the Northern Indian food is that the former prefer coconut milk while the latter likes to use cashew nuts butter in their curries.

In D'Tandoor, you'll see in their menu stated no MSG and no ghee. They use butter instead of ghee. The mains are beef jal Frezy, butter chicken, and masala fish. There's also a mixed vegetable in creamy butterish sauce. To eat these dishes there's plain rice, briyani rice, plain naan and garlic-butter naan.

I love the naan here. The thickness is just right. It's not too thick as if you're eating into flour, there's still crispiness intact. Even if I eat it on it's own it's already very good.

The rice here is very good too. The Indian rice is used for the Briyani and plain rice here. It's a bit longer than the Thai rice we usually had here. It has quite a different aroma and texture, which to me it's very good. I wondered if the orange colour is because of saffron.

Butter chicken is my favourite. I didn't feel jelak at all when digging into it. Goes very well with the naan and rice.

This mixed vegetables dish has diced green peas, carrots, corns, button mushrooms and pineapple. The pineapple really helps to maintain my appetite when I was too overblown by the three other meat dishes.

I don't know why but fish cooked this way is my least favourite. It tend to make the fish too soft. It is worse when it gets cold. Not for my taste bud but it's still not too bad.

Ah, the beef jal Frezy is quite good too. Not the normal beef curry or rendang found in the mamak restaurant. Those will make eating the mutton quite jelak. The beef here is cook in a way that is not too overwhelming. Nice.

It's a miracle that I was able to finished all the dishes. Lastly they served dessert, Gulab Jamoon, Milk Dumplings deep fried in oil and soaked in rose scented sugar syrup. Sigh, Indian dessert is never my kind of thing. From my calculation, there were only 12 dishes served including dessert. Where's the 13th? Or I miscalculate? Oh, I think it's because I get two pieces of Vegetable Pakora. That will make it 13.

Oh well, never mind, I won't have room to fit another dish if there's one. If you like to try many of it's dishes. Such a nice meal and I only paid RM15 for it. These group buying sites should have opened earlier, we are like 10 years late as compared to Taiwan.

We have passed by this restaurant a few times, but never tried it before. Should be good as it is always full. But then, it is Non-Halal though.

Been a few months since Xiao Fei Yang opened it's doors to the PJ clientele, and it's business has never been better. Main branch is in KL which has been popular for years..

Specializing in steamboat, the main choices of soup were Mah Lat (spicy) and herbal..

Just order the raw ingredients you'd like to add to your steam boat and wahlah, you'll get piping hot food, readily soothing a hungry belly on a rainy day. There's quite a range of fresh ingredients to choose from..

We did of course, ordered some sliced mutton, since the restaurant is named after some fat lamb, no? :p

Most unfortunately, I ordered the thick, sliced mutton which turned out extremely gamey and I really dont like it..

Thinly sliced beef fared way better..

Just dip into the boiling soup for a few seconds and it's good to eat.

The herbal soup served in Xiao Fei Yang was thick and strong , which can be rather heavy for some diners. Overall, I left the place rather unimpressed; the food was mediocre, the soup was just ok and pricing wise- quite steep. Not sure if I'll revisit.

We should be quite blessed to have plenty of good food close by our area. The porridge from this place here is quite good. You are recommended to try, but unfortunately it is "non halal".

They have a variety of porridge and best of all for me, dessert.

An additional side order of Pork Meatball (3pcs) for RM1.50 to be added into our smooth porridge was also satisfying. Love the texture of their meatball as they were very different from those conventional pre-packed porkballs.

Extra Super Tanker Restaurant

Syndicated from Blogger Gila Makan

Is this an unique or a bizarre name for a Chinese restaurant? Extra Super Tanker. Why extra? Super Tanker is already an inconceivable name for a restaurant. Extra?

I first experienced EST perhaps 5 to 6 years ago. It was then only one restaurant in Damansara Kim at Jalan SS20/10 in PJ. Now they have 2 restaurants. A branch opened in The Club @ Bukit Utama, at No. 1, Club Drive, Bandar Utama not too long ago. I have been to both restaurants. They are both good. But somehow I prefer the one at Bandar Utama.

I like EST for the many innovative dishes that I have tasted over the many visits. My latest visit was back to the original outlet in Damansara Kim. It had been awhile since I was there and I was in for a surprise. It had a complete makeover.

The Damansara Kim EST used to be in a single shop lot. Now it occupies three. It now has a totally new decor, pleasant lightings, rather gaudy curtains and fabric covered seats. It is definitely a better dining environment.

Twelve of us were there for dinner not too long ago. It was a family outing. We were there for some wine, good food and a change from the ordinary. But it turned out somewhat not so exceptional. Perhaps we did not quite ordered the right dishes.

The first dish was a mutton soup. It was superb. It was not the first time we had this soup. And it lived up to the previous delight. The soup was kind of milky in taste. It was very aromatic and I could detect the strong presence of herbs. The meat was tender and delicious. It is served with green vegetable and a sauce which, I do not even know how to describe. Absolutely delicious.

Next was a duck in a kind of a sandwich. The duck meat was wrapped with a fried-something and some green vege in a white steamed bun. I wish I can be more specific on the fried 'something', but I don't really know what it was that we ate. It was nice. Quite innovative. We only had a piece each. Wished there was more. But there was excess duck meat and it was served separately in another dish.

The tilapia was big and steamed in a chilli and garlic sauce. It was very good. The fish was probably alive when we ordered it. So very fresh. Not a whiff of fishy smell. And the sauce was one of a kind - fabulous. We picked it to the bones. The tilapia may be a humble fish. But it sure can taste great when prepared the proper way.

Then there was the tofu with scallops, french beans, mushrooms and pine nuts in a yellow creamy sauce. I don't know the name of the dish. It was quite innovative as well and tasted OK. Not the most exciting dish. But I enjoyed it nevertheless.

Those were all the good dishes that night. The rest to come were not so great.

The braised pork was totally unappetizing. Looked unappetizing, tasted unappetizing. Even my picture did not turn up nice.

The kai-lan (芥蘭) dish was rather uninteresting. It was kai-lan stem with crispy fried cuttle-fish and some pine seeds. Not great at all.

I did not like the next vegetable dish either. I don't even know what it was. It had a kind of bitter taste that was not too agreeable with me.

Finally, the lap mei rice (腊味饭) was a disaster. It was rice cooked with Chinese sausages and waxed-duck (those that we have during CNY) in a clay pot. The rice was burnt and was rather tasteless. The smell of burnt rice overpowered all other flavours. There were a lot of meat and liver sausages, waxed meat and waxed duck. We couldn't eat them all. It was the flavoured rice that we were after but it was terrible. We finally tar pow all the meat back for the benefit of Bob, our Golden Retriever. We had lap mei rice before in their Bandar Utama establishment. It was good then. I don't know why it was so terrible that night in Damansara Kim.

Dessert was Chinese pancake and sea coconut. Rather ordinary. We wanted red bean paste (紅豆沙) but they ran out and we had to settle for the sea coconut, which I felt was rather too sourish for a dessert.

EST has a website and they attempt to promote themselves for fine Chinese dining. I do not think they have yet reached that grade. Also there is an obvious consistency gap between their 2 outlets which they need to narrow. The Bandar Utama branch is undoubtedly more superior in food taste. Still it is a restaurant that I will return to again and again.

I have never been here before but from the outside, it looks catchy and tempting. The Cupcakes seems to be good here.

A sweet cup cake with a latte is best!

Today we were having our lunch at Wondermilk Cafe, Damansara Utama. Having admired their website & cupcakes design, at last I have an opportunity to visit the place.

Wondermilk is most known for their cupcakes which are beautiful and adoring. My friend said their taste was delicious and irresistible too.

For me, yes the cupcakes are cute and interesting. Of course when the presentation is nearly perfect, design + taste + packaging + environment + services, the price will be a little bit expensive. But I never fail to buy myself four maxi cupcakes with the price of RM17.00. wow!!.... nevertheless, it is ok to indulgence ourselves right (sometimes)?

The environment is super cool. I like the interior design of the café. It’s a little bit artistic in an old fashion way. They have different set of tables and chairs which make me stop and decide where we shall sit. The details decoration & ornaments make the café more welcoming and warm. I love it so much.

Apart from cupcakes, they have foods such as sandwiches, baked potato and chicken wings. For today, I got myself Mr Egghead Sandwish (RM 5++) & Pineaple drinks (RM7.00). (It’s not enough for me doh. Huh)

Just be there if you want to taste their cupcakes and experience a different side of a lifestyle.

They serve all type of western food at a cheap price and of course it is tasty. One should try their beef steak with LANUN gravy (a combination of black pepper and cream of mushroom) and it cost MYR 11/=

Brother John Burger @ Damansara Utama (Uptown)

By word of mouth we heard that this Burger stall is one of the best in Damansara, so good that their business beats the McD restaurant situated right opposite.

The stall should be easy to find as it is opposite the Damansara Uptown McD restaurant, and in front of Restaurant Bee Fatt. Bon Apetit!

Gourmet Burger or Street Burger? Sorry, but I’d take a messy, sloppy burger with overflowing juice that leaves my shirt stained, especially on days when cash runs low.

KampungBoy’s friend, Sehli introduced us to Brother John’s burger sometime ago and there is no turning back. It has remained as one of our favorite burger stall. The secret lies in the generous squeeze of various sauces that make the burger so juicy.

If you are game for something HUGE, go for the Master Burger that comes with double patties, double cheese and an egg.

It was entertaining to watch the chef in action. First, Bro John’s help sliced the patties into half, and he would add some chili powder, pepper and mustard between the sliced patties.

The patties and cheese were placed on top of the fried egg and more chili powder, pepper and soy sauce was added to give it more flavour. The egg layer was folded to wrap the patties completely. The last step calls for a crisp bun with the usual vegetables. Assemble everything together and ta-da!

Featuring a meaty beef patty, a melting layer of cheese, a crepe like layer of egg and assorted vegetables, all slathered in the richest mustard and mayonnaise dressing, the burger is probably one of the messiest and ugliest ordeal I’ve ever seen. There’s no better way to eat a burger other than holding it with your hands and sinking your teeth into it. The mustard and mayonnaise dressing gives the burger a juicy texture, while the patty with the perfect thickness delivers an appealing burst or flavor and seasoning. It is the ultimate comfort food.

Have you got your dose of Ramli Burger? Brother John’s burger stall is located outside Restoran Bee Fatt, Damansara Utama.

Chef Kit's Salt Baked Chicken @ Damansara Uptown, PJ

I have not tried this place yet, but an introduction by another blogger makes me wanting to go there soon to find out.

Chef Kit's Salt Baked Chicken
No. 25, Jalan SS21/56B,
Damansara Utama (Uptown),
47400 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor
Tel: 03-77222172, 012-9697988
Opening Hours: 11am - 9pm

Chef Kit's!..........

Lo and behold, it had undergone a face lift - now it looks much fresher, and is a much more comfortable place to dine (air conditioned). I remember that the restaurant name was different (Taste 2 Taste? Or something like that) but thankfully, it has retained its original management and (more importantly) food quality:

Simple, air conditioned and comfy interior..........

There is quite a limited array of different variations of the chicken (eg. quarter/ half/ one whole chicken with rice/ noodles/ different kinds of soup) and a couple of side dishes (simple fried vegetables, fried foo chook, soup wantans, etc) but no complaints - so far, everything I tasted there is yummy.

But there are also different rice and noodle dishes (eg. fried rice, Shanghai Tan Tan noodles, clay pot loh shuu fun, etc) that they serve on weekdays, so if you ever get bored of the chicken, there are still other options... :)

That day, we chose the Meal Set 1 (RM 19.90):

Set 1 (for 2 people)..........

This set is supposed to serve 2, and comes with:
- half a salt baked chicken,
- fried taugeh (beansprouts)
- deep fried wantans
- choice of either rice, noodles (wantan noodle, loh shuu fun, kuey teow, etc) served either dry or in plain or herbal soup.

They use Kampung Chicken (Village Chicken) which is supposed to be healthier than the normal mass produced farmed poultry... but it is also much smaller in size and generally has a tougher texture (supposedly because village chickens are more "fit" and less fat from all the running around *lol*):

A closer look at the chicken..........

Anyway, yes - the chicken was definitely a bit on the small size (I think I could have easily polished off the whole serving myself on a greedy day) but it was fairly tender and really tasty.
(Most salt baked chickens are just well, salty... but the one here has a really nice fragrance of herbs soaked well into the meat)

My favourite noodle here is the kuey teow (pictured here with the Herbal soup) - silky and springy without tasting starchy or synthetic:

Silky Ipoh Kuey Teow..........

The deep fried wantans were a little tiny but mmmmmmm - they were crunchy and delicious!
(The filling was little but flavourful - can taste a little bit of spices/ herbs which added a distinctive taste to this simple side dish)

There's also an interesting new drink on the menu - the pomelo juice (RM 3):

Pomelo juice..........

Overall it's ok. As the friendly boss lady explained, it tastes a little like 100 Plus but without the fizz (and not quite as sweet too) so it was pretty refreshing.

(Note: If you're coming at night, you are advised to call in earlier to "book" your chicken as they can run out... Oh, and now they are doing deliveries to selected areas too - please call to check whether they can send to you)
